If you're considering a Volvo electric or plug-in hybrid, Canada's new federal EV rebate is worth understanding before you make any decisions. The program launched in February 2026 and has already generated a lot of questions from Volvo buyers. Here's the honest picture of which models may qualify, and what to realistically expect.
The Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) replaced the previous iZEV program, which ran out of allocated funds. Like its predecessor, EVAP offers $5,000 for battery-electric vehicles and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids, applied directly at the point of sale. No rebate cheque, no waiting.
The key change from iZEV: EVAP uses the final transaction value rather than the base MSRP to determine eligibility. That final number must be $50,000 or less. For vehicles manufactured in Canada, there is no price cap. For all others, the threshold applies.
The Volvo EX30 is Volvo's most compact all-electric model and the one closest to the EVAP threshold. Canadian pricing starts around $53,638, which puts it just above the $50,000 cap. Because the EX30 is manufactured in China, it is subject to the cap rather than exempt from it.
Whether a specific EX30 configuration could qualify depends on the final negotiated price. It's worth having a direct conversation at Morrey Volvo of Burnaby to understand what's currently available.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is a well-regarded all-electric compact SUV, but its pricing places it clearly above the $50,000 EVAP threshold. At current pricing, the final transaction value would not come in under the cap, making it ineligible for the $5,000 EV rebate.
EVAP includes a $2,500 rebate for plug-in hybrid vehicles, but the same $50,000 final transaction value cap applies. The Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid and Volvo XC60 PHEV are both priced well above that threshold at current levels. At this time, neither qualifies for the PHEV rebate under the program's rules.
EVAP is designed to work alongside provincial incentive programs. However, BC's CleanBC passenger vehicle rebate has been fully allocated and is currently paused. For BC buyers right now, EVAP is the primary federal incentive available.
The rebate starts at its highest point in 2026 at $5,000 for fully electric vehicles and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids, and decreases annually through 2030. The program runs until March 31, 2031 or until funding runs out. If you're planning to make the move to electric, this year carries the most value under the program.
Volvo's Recharge lineup represents some of the most thoughtfully engineered vehicles in the segment. To understand how EVAP applies to a specific model and configuration, book a test drive at Morrey Volvo of Burnaby, and the team can walk you through the full picture.
