The best balance between an all-gas vehicle and a fully electric car is without a doubt the plug-in hybrid (PHEV). These vehicles incorporate all of Volvo’s advancements in the combustion engine field, but they pair all that knowledge with the best in terms of new and advanced electric propulsion in order to provide drivers with the best of both worlds.
Let’s review the differences between Volvo Recharge PHEV models and electric models.
Recharge PHEV models include an efficient all-gas engine
Volvo PHEV owners can take full advantage of silent, efficient and powerful electric range for daily commutes without having to stop at the pump, while the all-gas engine can take over when the battery runs out to give maximum range for long trips. All of this happens while keeping optimal performance and dynamics of the vehicle.
All Recharge PHEV Volvos include a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre forced induction engine that provides plenty of power and torque by itself. Volvo adds a set of electric motors as well as a battery in order to not only kick up those power and torque numbers, but also to offer fully electric range for drivers who want to choose when they use gasoline.
Pure Electric recharge models offer plenty of range
Thanks to a powerful 75 kWh battery pack, your fully electric C40 or XC40 offers up to 335 kilometres of fully electric range before you have to charge them. This is plenty of distance for day-to-day trips and errands, as well as weekend getaways out of the city.
If charging times are important, know that your PHEV Volvo model can fully recharge in 3 to 4 hours when using a fast-charging wall box at home. It will take 8-9 hours to fully charge your pure electric Recharge model using a similar piece of equipment.
Whether you go for a Recharge pure electric or plug-in hybrid car, you can drive it without any tailpipe emissions. Just select Pure electric drive mode in your plug-in hybrid to carry out your daily commute using purely the car’s electric motor.
Volvo currently has two pure electric models, the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Volvo C40 Recharge. The plug-in hybrid lineup is broader, it includes the XC90, XC60, V90, V60, S90 and S60.
