The 2021 Volvo XC90 strikes an impressive balance between power and efficiency
Three XC90 powertrains speak volumes of the advanced technology crafted into each engine. The first offered, the T5, powers the Momentum gas model with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It accomplishes an impressive fuel consumption rating of 11.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway.
The T6 engine is available with all XC90 gas trims. It includes a turbocharged engine that delivers 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque while maintaining a combined efficiency rating of 10.5 L/100 km.
Volvo's T8 powerplant is available with the XC90's Recharge Inscription and Momentum models. It delivers a net 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque while being one of the most efficient SUVs in its class, with an outstanding fuel consumption rating of 9.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway. It can drive on full electric power for 27 kilometres.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 is the better value
The Mercedes-Benz standard GLE lineup offers a few models. The GLE 350 4MATIC includes a turbocharged four-cylinder that outputs 255 horsepower. Compared to the XC90's T5-equipped models, the GLE 350 achieves slightly more horsepower, but the fuel consumption is higher with 12.4 L/100 km and 9.0 L/100 km (city/highway).
Overall, the XC90 wins the power and torque competition with the hybrid models. The GLE's AMG lineup climbs the performance ladder, but they are up to double the price of the XC90. This essentially creates an entirely distinct class of comparisons altogether.
Also, the XC90 brings technologies that go further than the GLE’s capabilities. Like the Pilot Assist feature, which provides steering assistance and accelerator input and basically drive the XC90 with very little driver interaction.
