Elevating its electric vehicle game, Volvo has announced exciting updates to its fully electric XC40 Recharge for the 2024 model year. The key enhancements include the introduction of a new powertrain and a rear-wheel drive variant – a first for Volvo Car Canada – which promise to significantly increase the vehicle's range. This marks the automaker's inaugural foray into offering a fully-electric rear-wheel drive product, a development that doesn't compromise the brand's signature safety and driving dynamics.
Further bolstering Volvo's commitment to innovation, the company has also developed a second-generation permanent magnet electric motor in-house, which will power the rear axles of the updated XC40 model. Javier Varela, COO and deputy CEO at Volvo Cars, remarked, "These updates are another big step in our work towards becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030," acknowledging the growing importance of range and charging times for electric vehicle customers.
Rear-Wheel Power Returns
Volvo's 2024 XC40 Recharge model debuts rear-wheel power, enhancing traction due to evenly distributed battery and motor weights. The vehicle features a robust 185 kW e-motor on the rear axle and an upgraded 82kWh battery pack, allowing it to achieve an impressive range of 471 kms on the combined EPA test cycle (pending final certification). Furthermore, the enhanced battery enables rapid charging at a top rate of 200 kW DC, taking the vehicle from a 10-80 percent charge in about 28 minutes.
Updated Twin Motor AWD Variant
Volvo's updated 2024 XC40 Recharge introduces an innovative Twin Motor all-wheel drive variant, featuring an in-house developed 255 hp electric motor on the rear axle and an energy-conserving 147 hp asynchronous motor on the front axle. The model retains its 78kWh battery pack, allowing it to achieve an impressive range of 408 km - a 49km increase over its predecessor. Efficiency is further boosted by new aerodynamic 19-inch alloy wheels, which reduce drag and enhance the vehicle's aesthetics.
In summary, Volvo's new 2024 XC40 Recharge model is setting the standard for electric SUVs, with a range-boosting powertrain and rear-wheel drive option that doesn't compromise on style or performance. This marks an important milestone in Volvo's commitment to becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030, as it continues to develop innovative solutions for the growing electric vehicle market. The updated XC40 Recharge is a must-have for any eco-conscious driver looking for an all-inclusive electric vehicle experience.
