Essentially, a PHEV is a hybrid but with a larger battery that allows for full-EV cruising and can be recharged via charge cable at journey’s end. They are an absolute boon for fuel savings and in today’s economic climate, that’s critical. Especially in BC, where gas prices are some of the highest in Canada and the EV charging network is robust.
And wouldn’t you know it, but Volvo is one of the leaders in the PHEV ecosystem, a move that started with this: the XC90 Recharge SUV.
The XC90 Recharge gets all the features Volvo’s always been known for: interiors with perfect lighting, ultra-supportive and plush seats and crystal-clear Bowers & Wilkins audio. It also gets a four-cylinder turbocharged engine – another Volvo staple in recent years – but has the added benefit of both a supercharger and an EV motor on the rear axle, which provides AWD while the battery allows for all-EV driving for up to 58 km. After that, you can simply plug it in or activate one-pedal driving for battery regen on the go.

Petro-Canada, Electrify Canada, Chargepoint and BC Hydro have all set up EV charging networks throughout the Province, meaning that even on long road trips -- with just a little extra planning – you can charge on the go, only driving using the gas motor if absolutely necessary.
