Volvo Cars has pulled back the curtain on its most significant investment in software development and testing thus far—a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. This 22,000-square-meter complex solidifies the company's commitment to in-house software advancement, initially drawing on a SEK 300 million investment. The Gothenburg facility is not just another building; it is the crown jewel in Volvo's ever-expanding network of global engineering centres and Tech Hubs.
While the Swedish automaker already operates software testing facilities in Lund, Sweden and Shanghai, China, the Gothenburg centre sets a new standard, superseding its sister sites in both scale and capability. "This is a state-of-the-art facility that will be the hub for our global software testing and validation activities," stated Anders Bell, Volvo's global head of R&D. The site will operate around the clock, accommodating developers worldwide to run tests remotely 365 days a year.
Accelerating the Electric Future
In line with Volvo's strategic goal to become a fully electric car company by 2030, the new testing centre will bolster the software capabilities essential to models like the EX90 and EX30 SUVs. These vehicles are not merely hardware pieces but are designed to improve continuously through over-the-air software updates. The Gothenburg facility will initially employ about 100 people and is expected to scale up to 300 personnel as it reaches peak operational efficiency. It will also accommodate around 500 testing rigs and digital test environments, a considerable jump from the nearly 200 currently in place.
As Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo's global head of software engineering, expressed, the new centre aims to "boost our innovation speed" across key areas—from core safety technology and driver assistance algorithms to the development of future autonomous driving software. This facility strengthens Volvo Cars' global network of innovation centres, which includes the recently launched Tech Hub in Singapore and the soon-to-be-established software-focused Tech Hub in Krakow, Poland.
This milestone signifies Volvo Cars' readiness to lead in a transforming industry, focusing on electric vehicles empowered by cutting-edge in-house developed software. With its ambitious roadmap and a new facility, Volvo is indeed setting a new benchmark for automotive technology.
